- How many carriers can actually reach you. Two credible options in a building change the price more than any negotiating tactic.
- Whether you need an SLA. Dropping from dedicated to broadband is the largest single cost reduction available, where the business can tolerate it.
- Metro versus rural. The spread between a downtown Des Moines address and a rural site is wide, and it is mostly construction, not bandwidth.

- Start the conversation 90 days before your current contract ends, not 10.
- Ask specifically whether the building is already lit. If it is, say so, because it changes what the carrier can offer.
