What Is Business Fiber?

Glass to the building instead of copper or coax, sold on a business contract with business terms.

Fiber is the medium, not the product

Fiber just means the signal travels as light through glass instead of electricity through copper. That is a physics improvement, not a product tier.

What you buy on top of that fiber is the part that matters. The same strand can deliver a cheap shared broadband service or a guaranteed dedicated circuit. Same glass, very different contract.

Why two buildings on one street get different answers

This surprises people constantly. Your neighbor has gigabit fiber. You are quoted a six figure construction charge. Both are true.

Carriers publish coverage at the neighborhood level and bill at the building level. What decides your answer is whether fiber is already lit into your specific address.

  • Lit building. Fiber is already terminated inside. Installation is days to a few weeks and construction cost is usually zero.
  • On-net nearby. Fiber runs past the property but not into it. You are looking at a lateral build, some weeks, and a cost the carrier may or may not absorb depending on contract length.
  • Off-net. The nearest fiber is a real distance away. Now you are talking construction, permits, and a number with commas in it.

Questions that get you a straight answer

  • Is my building lit today, or is this a build?
  • If it is a build, what is the construction charge at 36 months and at 60 months?
  • Whose fiber is it in the last mile? Some carriers resell someone else's and it changes who fixes it at 3am.
  • What is the installation interval in writing, measured from signed order?
  • Is the SLA on the whole circuit or only the carrier's own backbone?

Common questions

Is business fiber worth it over business cable?

Usually yes if you upload a lot or run voice, because cable upload is a fraction of download. If you mostly download and cost is tight, business cable is a legitimate answer.

Can I get business fiber at a home office?

Sometimes, and it is often not worth it. Carriers quote residential addresses at business rates without business installation economics. Check business broadband first.
