Redundant Fiber Connections Montana
Most businesses that think they have a redundant connection do not. Here is how to check.
In brief Two carriers are not automatically redundant. Real redundancy requires separate physical routes and, for the strongest design, separate building entrances as well as separate equipment.
Buying two circuits is easy. Buying two circuits that cannot fail at the same time is the actual job, and it is where most redundancy projects quietly go wrong.
The failure looks like this. You buy a primary from one carrier and a backup from another. Both are delivered over the same physical fiber route, entering your building through the same conduit. A backhoe finds that conduit and both circuits drop together. You paid twice for one connection.
The four levels of diversity

Carrier diversity alone is what most people buy and what most people assume is enough. It is the weakest of the four.
Questions that expose a fake second path
- Which physical entrance does each circuit use to enter the building? If the answer is the same one, stop there.
- Show me the route each circuit takes to the first aggregation point. Ask for it in writing.
- Is any part of the last mile leased from the same underlying provider? Two brands frequently ride one wholesale network.
- Where do the two paths first share infrastructure? There is always an answer. You need to know where it is.
- If we lose commercial power, what happens? Diversity in fiber does not help if both handoffs sit on the same unprotected outlet.
What actually threatens a Montana circuit
- Single corridor routes. Traffic leaves Montana on a small number of paths, largely following Interstate 90 and Interstate 94 and the BNSF northern main line. Two carriers can look diverse on paper and share a corridor for hundreds of miles across the state.
- Distance to repair. This is the Montana specific one. A cut two hundred miles from the nearest technician takes longer to fix than the same cut in a metro, whatever the SLA says about response time. Ask where the crew is based, not just what the credit is.
- Winter. Extreme cold, drifting snow and closed roads all delay a physical repair, and they arrive at the same time as the peak load on heating, agricultural and public safety systems.
- Wildfire. Western Montana carries genuine fire risk to aerial plant, to powered field equipment and to road access for repair crews. It is a summer exposure sitting opposite the winter one.
- Single path out of a county. Many rural Montana communities are served by one route. A second carrier in town that reaches it over the same fiber is not redundancy, and that arrangement is common here.
- Shared building entrances. Two carriers frequently enter the same commercial building through the same conduit, which quietly undoes the diversity you paid for. This is not a Montana problem, but it is easy to overlook when the carrier count is low.

The part people skip
A failover path that has never been tested is a hypothesis. Pull the primary circuit during a maintenance window and watch what actually happens. Time it.
The usual discoveries are that failover takes far longer than expected, that something critical was bound to the primary circuit's IP addresses, or that the backup works but is too small to carry the real load. All three are much better found on a Tuesday morning than during an outage.
