Billings is the largest city in Montana and the commercial centre for a service area that runs well past the state line into northern Wyoming and the western Dakotas. The distinguishing feature of this market is that TDS chose Billings as its first Montana city, so parts of the metro now have a third genuinely independent fiber network rather than a reseller. Ziply lists Billings as well. Vision Net keeps an office here and is the strongest option for transport and for anything reaching out into the rural service area. Zayo carries long haul on the corridor rather than dense metro fiber.
What is genuinely different about buying here
- The Rimrocks. The sandstone cliffs along the northern edge of the city are a genuine construction obstacle, and a route that has to get up, down or around them is not priced like the same footage on the flat.
- The refinery corridor and the rail yards mean a build in the eastern industrial areas frequently needs a railroad or industrial crossing, and those approvals are not on the carrier's schedule.
- TDS coverage inside Billings is real but partial. Ask about your exact address rather than about the city, and re-ask if the answer was no more than a few months ago.
- Refinery and industrial tenants should raise process network separation and any controlled data handling requirement at the first conversation, because it narrows both the carriers and the delivery methods.
- Winter decides the calendar. Frozen ground makes trenching a May to October activity in practice, and a build quoted in the autumn is often a spring job.
- Older downtown stock varies a lot. Fiber at the property line is not fiber in your suite, and riser access is a landlord conversation.

Is Billings the best place in Montana for business fiber?
Yes, on the evidence available. It is the only Montana metro where an ordinary address might reach the incumbent, the cable operator and a third company's own fiber, and that third option is what actually moves a price. It is still a market where checking every carrier is worth real money, because coverage is uneven inside the city.
TDS said no at our address last year. Is that still the answer?
Possibly not, and it is worth a second call. TDS is mid-build in Billings against a stated 160 million dollar Montana investment, and coverage has been expanding street by street since 2021. A no from an active build has a shorter shelf life than a no from a finished network.
Why is a Billings construction quote higher than we expected?
Usually the route rather than the distance. The Rimrocks, the rail corridor and the refinery area all force crossings or detours that cost more per foot than open ground, and in the eastern industrial areas a railroad crossing approval can add time nobody controls. Ask what the route has to cross before assuming the number is negotiable.
