Lumen is the incumbent telephone company across Montana through the former Mountain Bell, US West and Qwest footprint, and unlike some western states it holds that position statewide. Billings, Missoula, Great Falls, Bozeman, Helena and Butte are all its territory. That gives it the widest last mile reach of any carrier in Montana. It also means a large legacy copper base sitting underneath that reach, and in a state this rural the copper share is higher than the national picture suggests.
