The incumbent local phone company across most of the Midwest and Mountain West, merged with Level 3's national long haul network.
Lumen is the incumbent telephone company in southern Nevada through CenturyLink of Nevada, formerly the Central Telephone Company, and Las Vegas is its largest market in the state. That gives it the widest last mile reach in the valley. Northern Nevada is a different story: Reno and Carson City are AT&T incumbent territory, and Lumen operates there as a route owner and competitive carrier rather than as the local phone company.
Where Lumen is strong
- Very wide last mile reach, including smaller cities other national carriers skip
- Owns both the local access and the long haul, so multi-site and multi-state builds stay on one network
- Strong dedicated internet and wavelength portfolio
Lumen in Nevada specifically
- Strongest last mile position in the Las Vegas valley, including addresses where nobody else has existing plant.
- Owns long haul through Nevada on both the Interstate 15 and Interstate 80 corridors, which simplifies a Las Vegas to Reno network.
- In Reno, Sparks and Carson City expect a competitive carrier answer rather than an incumbent one. It is still worth quoting, but do not assume existing facilities.
- The southern Nevada footprint carries a lot of legacy copper. Ask explicitly whether your address gets fiber or a copper based product.
- Lumen sold its consumer fiber business to AT&T in February 2026 and kept the central offices, the backbone and every enterprise customer. Nothing a business buys from Lumen changed hands.
Best fit. Las Vegas valley addresses, Nevada networks that cross both metros, and anywhere in the south nobody else has plant.
What to watch for before you sign
- Legacy copper footprint is being retired. Ask whether your address is fiber served or still copper.
- Quoted install intervals stretch when a lateral build is involved.
- Account handling varies a lot by market and by whether you land in the enterprise or SMB channel.
- Lumen sold its consumer fiber business and the Quantum Fiber brand to AT&T in February 2026. It kept the backbone, the central offices, and every enterprise and wholesale customer, so nothing a business buys here changed hands.
