altafiber is the incumbent telephone company here, not AT&T, and that inverts the Ohio carrier order. It has the widest last mile reach in the metro and the deepest fiber to the premises position of any Ohio incumbent. Charter's Spectrum holds cable franchise and is the main established alternative. AT&T sells here as a competitive carrier without local incumbent facilities, which is the reverse of its position in every other Ohio metro. Zayo carries metro fiber and Cogent is competitive in on-net downtown and data centre buildings. Lumen matters through the former Embarq footprint in the surrounding area rather than in the core.

- altafiber publishes fiber to the premises at roughly 60 percent of Greater Cincinnati addresses. That is a strong figure and it still means roughly four in ten are not passed, so ask about yours.
- The terrain here is hills and river valleys, not flat plain. A build in the older hillside neighbourhoods is priced on the route rather than on the mileage.
- The Ohio River is the state line. A network with sites on both sides is dealing with two states, two regulatory environments and sometimes two franchise maps.
- Over-the-Rhine and the older downtown stock is historic building fabric. Riser work and landlord approval take longer here than in newer development, and preservation rules can apply.

Why is AT&T not the phone company in Cincinnati?
Because Cincinnati Bell was one of the independent operating companies that stayed outside the Bell System divestiture structure, so it never became part of Ameritech the way Ohio Bell did. It is still the incumbent here, trading as altafiber since March 2022. AT&T sells in Cincinnati as a competitive carrier, which is the reverse of its position everywhere else in Ohio.
Is altafiber the same thing as Cincinnati Bell?
Yes. Macquarie took Cincinnati Bell private in September 2021 and the company rebranded as altafiber in March 2022. The network, the exchanges and the incumbent position did not change. Older contracts and circuit records say Cincinnati Bell, and plenty of people in this market still call it that.
Does having a strong incumbent mean we do not need to compare?
