Lumen is not the incumbent telephone company in any of the eight metros on this site, which makes Ohio unusual among the states we cover. What it does hold here is territory inherited through Embarq, the former Sprint landline business that became part of CenturyLink in 2009, weighted toward mid-sized and rural Ohio markets. Add Level 3's national long haul and Lumen matters more in Ohio's secondary cities than its national profile suggests, so it is worth quoting rather than assuming.

Lumen in Ohio specifically
- Not the incumbent in Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, Akron, Dayton, Canton or Youngstown. Expect a competitive carrier answer in all eight.
- The former Embarq footprint gives it real last mile in parts of mid-sized and rural Ohio, which is where it is most likely to surprise you.
- Owns long haul across the state, which simplifies a network that has to leave Ohio.
- Strong dedicated internet and wavelength portfolio where it can deliver on-net.
- Lumen sold its consumer fiber business to AT&T in February 2026. That covered eleven states and it changed nothing a business buys from Lumen.
Best fit. Ohio secondary markets in the former Embarq footprint, and multi-state networks where Ohio is one leg.
What to watch for before you sign
- Legacy copper footprint is being retired. Ask whether your address is fiber served or still copper.
- Quoted install intervals stretch when a lateral build is involved.
- Account handling varies a lot by market and by whether you land in the enterprise or SMB channel.
- Lumen sold its consumer fiber business and the Quantum Fiber brand to AT&T in February 2026. It kept the backbone, the central offices, and every enterprise and wholesale customer, so nothing a business buys here changed hands.
